Add a Minor in Classical Languages
A minor in classical languages is an excellent way to solidify your skills in the modern English language, while expanding your interest in ancient Mediterranean cultures. Students gain a solid understanding of both ancient Greek and Latin.
Learning outcomes
- Confidence when reading the ancient Greek and Latin languages at an intermediate to advanced level
- Knowledge of major literary works and written sources of the ancient Mediterranean world
- Transferable linguistic and analytic skills by studying the ancient languages that stand behind the vocabulary and structure of English and the Romance languages
Requirements
The undergraduate minor in classical languages requires a minimum of 18 semester hours, at least 12 semester hours of which must be in advanced courses taken at the University of Iowa. All courses in Greek numbered CLSG:2001 or above and all courses in Latin numbered CLSL:2001 or above are considered advanced for the minor. Students must maintain a GPA of at least 2.00 in all courses for the minor and in all UI courses for the minor. Coursework in the minor may not be taken pass/nonpass.
Students may count one advanced relevant classics department course taught in English (prefix CLSA:3000 or above) toward the minor. A maximum of 6 semester hours of work for another University of Iowa major, minor, or certificate, and up to 3 semester hours of lower-level transfer credit may be counted toward the minor.
For a list of relevant courses, contact the undergraduate advisor. Students who have taken high school Greek or Latin should consult the advisor. The Latin Advanced Placement (AP) exam with a score of 4 or higher may be used to complete the General Education Program: World Languages component, or used as elective hours. Students with previous knowledge of Greek or Latin language, should take the World Languages Placement Test (WLPT) to determine the best level for your first enrollment in a language course.
