Add a Minor in Latin

A minor in Latin is an excellent way to formalize intermediate abilities in the language achieved while completing the World Languages GE or exploring an interest in reading famous authors and philosophers (Ovid, Cicero, etc.) in their native language.

Learning outcomes

  • Confidence when reading Latin at an intermediate to advanced level;
  • Knowledge of major literary works and written sources from the Roman world; and
  • Understanding of the impact that the political, intellectual, and social environments of the people from ancient Rome have on our own modern culture.

Requirements

The undergraduate minor in Latin requires a minimum of 15 semester hours, at least 12 semester hours of which must be in advanced courses taken at the University of Iowa. All courses in Latin numbered CLSL:2001 or above are considered advanced for the minor. Students must maintain a GPA of at least 2.00 in all courses for the minor and in all UI courses for the minor. Coursework in the minor may not be taken pass/nonpass.

Students may count one advanced relevant department course taught in English and centered around the ancient Roman world (prefix CLSA:3000 or above) toward the minor. A maximum of 6 semester hours of work for another University of Iowa major, minor, or certificate and up to 3 semester hours of lower-level transfer credit may be counted toward the minor.

For a list of relevant courses, contact the undergraduate advisor. Students who have taken high school Latin should consult the advisor. The Latin Advanced Placement (AP) exam with a score of 4 or higher may be used to complete the General Education Program: World Languages component, or used as elective hours. Students with previous knowledge of Latin language, should take the World Languages Placement Test (WLPT) to determine the best level for your first enrollment in a language course.

Listed below are the general categories of coursework required to earn the degree; for more specific information on courses, curriculum, and requirements of the minor in Latin, visit the UI General Catalog.
